8 Universities in USA Without Application Fee for International Students

Are you aware that there are universities in the USA without application fee for international students? As an international student, it is economical to look out for universities abroad without application fees because this would help you dodge some unnecessary expenses and instead direct them towards your tuition.

Studying abroad is relatively expensive, especially in the USA and other developed countries of the world. That is why it looks as though studying abroad is meant for only the wealthy ones.

Anyway, with study-abroad guardian blogs like www.studyabroadnations.com, you will get valuable guidance that would help you cut down expenses to the barest minimum or even tend to zero with a fully-funded scholarship.

You remember from my last updates concerning winning scholarships to study abroad I have always said that it is best you already have an admission offer before looking for scholarships to apply for.

These scholarship bodies want to make sure that the person they want to sponsor is qualified before being selected for the scholarship offer and the best way to confirm this is with proof of admission. This means you have to apply for admission first, and be offered admission before you win a scholarship.

However, there are some scholarships that you can still apply for and win without proof of prior scholarship, like the BEA scholarship offered by the Nigerian Federal government or some DAAD international scholarships, especially for Australians or international students willing to study there.

Earlier I talked about universities in Canada that you can apply to without an application fee. I also wrote about European universities without application fees which I recommend that you check out to find suitable institutions abroad.

For international students interested in Australia, I also wrote about Universities in Australia that charge no application fee and I think all these will be very useful to the many international students visiting this blog daily.

There are also some cheap online colleges that do not charge an application fee for international students. You can take a look at them too.

Today my focus is on the USA, it turns out there are universities in the US without application fee for international students and I will be discussing them in this article.

Universities in USA Without Application Fee for International Students

  • Smith College
  • Union College
  • Grinnell College
  • Rhodes College
  • New York University
  • Yale University
  • The University of Southern Florida
  • Michigan Tech University

1. Smith College

Smith College is one of the few universities in the United States without application fees for international students. The college welcomes more than 350 international students each year from around the world. To be considered for admission into Smith College, the admissions office/committee will assess you based on your high school program, performance, experiences, and potential for success at the college.

So, to apply for admission into Smith College you will be required to submit your transcript, letters of recommendation, and an essay. Your extracurricular activities will also be looked at to see exactly what you are bringing to the school.

2. Union College

Union College, founded in 1795, is a scholarly community dedicated to shaping the future and to understanding the past. It is a private liberal arts college located in Schenectady, New York, and welcomes students from around the world. Here at Union College, the international students represent 48 countries which makes the campus a diverse community.

Union College is one of those universities in the US without application fees for international students. SAT/ACT are optional at Union College but English language proficiency tests like TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test are required for all applicants who are not native English speakers. You will also be required to submit a transcript, essay, and recommendation letters from teachers and counselors as part of the application process.

3. Grinnell College

Grinnell College is another private liberal arts college in the US situated in Grinnell, Iowa and it is one of the universities in the USA without an application fee for international students. Admission to Grinnell is highly selective with an acceptance rate of 17%, and students come from diverse backgrounds. However, while no single factor guarantees admission, there are some characteristics that are undeniably Grinnellian.

In Grinnell, you must submit the Common Application before your admission application is considered. One of the intriguing things about Grinnell College is its open curriculum that allows students to choose the classes they want to take instead of the prescribed list of classes.

4. Rhodes College

Rhodes College is one of the universities in USA without application fee for both international and domestic students. Rhodes has about 2,000 undergraduate students with over 100 of them from more than 62 different countries.

Rhodes admissions is selective with an acceptance rate of 57%. Students who get into Rhodes have an average SAT score between 1315-1450 or an average ACT score of 28-32. International students who are not native English speakers must take the IELTS, TOEFL, or DET and submit test scores as part of the application requirement.

5. New York University

New York University is a prestigious higher institution in the US, imagine my surprise to find out they do not charge application fee for international students. Doing further research, I found out that NYU actually charges a nonrefundable application fee of $80 but if you cannot pay it, you can request a fee waiver.

So, it is not like NYU does not charge an application fee, they do but it can be waived if you apply for a waiver.

6. Yale University

Yale University, yes the Ivy League, also offers an application fee waiver. However, this waiver only works when applicants use the Common Application or Coalition Application to request that their application fee be waived.

The application fee at Yale University is $80 but it can be waived so that you don’t have to pay it.

7. The University of Southern Florida

Just because there are few universities in the US without application fees for international students I had to add the University of Southern Florida. This university charges an application fee of $30 for international students, but I had to include it here because it is very cheap. So, let’s just say USF is one of the universities in the US with a cheap application fee for international students.

8. Michigan Tech University

I will also be adding MTU to the list of universities in the US with low application fee for international students. If you are entering the undergraduate program at MTU, then be prepared to pay an application fee of $35 but if you are entering the graduate program then you will pay $10 as the application fee.

The application fees are nonrefundable and they are one-time payments. You will agree that these fees are cheap, aren’t they?

Conclusion

There are many universities in the US that accept international students but only about a handful of them do not charge application fees. However, whichever school in the US you will be applying for enquire about the application fee and request if there is an application fee waiver, in most cases, the school will be offering a waiver but there has to be a condition.
