The Austrian Academy of Sciences is calling for proposals for a new digital humanities programme. Groups of scientists from university and non-university research institutions in Austria who are still at the beginning of their careers are entitled to apply. The programme is primarily aimed at young scientists who wish to apply and enhance digital methods within the framework of cooperation projects.

The programme is intended to improve the framework conditions for data-based and data-driven research in the social sciences and humanities by intensifying the use of existing infrastructures, digital data, and tools.

The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) is Austria’s central non-university research and science institution. Its statutory mission is to “promote science in every way”. Founded in 1847 as a learned society, today the OeAW has over 770 members and 1,600 employees dedicated to innovative basic research, interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge and the dissemination of new insights with the aim of contributing to progress in science and society as a whole.

Scholarship Description:
Application Deadline: May 15, 2018
Course Level: Fellowships are available for scientists.
Study Subject: The programme is primarily aimed at young scientists who wish to apply and enhance digital methods within the framework of cooperation projects.
Scholarship Award: The budget for each of the projects is between a minimum of EUR 150,000 and a maximum of EUR 220,000. Up to 15 projects are envisaged. The grant shall also cover overheads in the amount of 10% of the direct project costs. The following direct costs may be applied for:
Staff costs
Costs for consumables
Travel expenses
Other costs
(Other costs mean costs which cannot be allocated to staff costs, consumables or travel expenses, such as e.g. reimbursement for the use of research infrastructure; offers must be enclosed)
Contracts for work or services

Entrance Requirements: To be eligible for this scholarship you must meet the following requirements:

Application requirements

Scientists from all disciplines with a maximum of 8 years since completion of their most-recent academic degree (calculated from the issue date of the certificate until 1 January 2018; copies of certificates of all proponents must be enclosed with the application).
Submission as a group of at least 2 scientists and an approximate gender balance among applicants. The share of female scientists in the group shall be at least 50 %. In the case of an uneven number more female scientists must be represented.
One scientist must assume the role of application coordinator.
Each scientist may only take part in one application.
The applicants must be prepared to pro-actively contribute to the public presentation of the programme and take part in associated events.
The project must take place in an Austrian research facility.
Approval from the representatives of the relevant research facilities must be enclosed with the application.
A research facility may support multiple applications.
English Language Requirements: Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of proficiency in English at the higher level required by the University.

How to Apply: The application form “Short Proposal” (description of the project), completed in full, CVs, publication lists and declarations of consent including enclosures must be submitted by the coordinator by email to programmmanagement(at)oeaw.ac.at by 15 May 2018 (stage 1 of the selection procedure).

Young scientists are invited to develop projects to address research questions regarding the social sciences and humanities where modern paradigms such as open innovation and the broad spectrum of digital humanities methods are applied and existing infrastructures, digital data, and tools are utilized. Applications reflecting the consciousness of the social component of digital research paradigms and the connection between science and society (also in the sense of citizen science), and also take into account the rapidly changing role of research in society as a result of increasing digitalization are explicitly welcome.

Applications must be made in English by submitting 4 files (no protected or scanned electronic documents):

  • “Short Proposal”, completed in full
  • CVs of all proponents
  • Publication lists of all proponents
  • Scan copy of all signed declarations of consent by all proponents and representatives of research institutions as well as copies of academic degree certificates of all proponents
