R&A International Scholarship at University of St Andrews UK, 2019

The University of St Andrews is inviting applications for R&A International Scholarships for 2019 entry. Eligible Junior and Senior Honours students will be invited to apply.

The main purpose of the scholarship is to give each successful applicant the opportunity to plan a year of travel to broaden his or her mind and learn from and interact with different communities.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews hold a unique position in the game of golf. Established in 1754, it has evolved through two and a half centuries as a leading authority in the world game. As the club celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2004, it devolved responsibility for the administration of the rules of golf, the running of The Open Championship and other key events, and the development of the game in existing and emerging nations, to a newly formed group of companies collectively known as The R&A.

Applications Deadline: January 25, 2019
• Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing Honours degree program
• Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded to study the subjects offered by university.
• Scholarship Award: The scholarship will be for travel, accommodation, subsistence and, only exceptionally, tuition fees. There will be at least two £10,000 scholarships awarded for 2019.
• Nationality: International students

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following criteria:
• Applicants must be matriculated undergraduates or will be immediate graduates of the University of St Andrews when taking up the Scholarship. (Note: the scholarship is unlikely to be awarded to an undergraduate with less than three years’ study at the University).

• Applicants must submit their application online prior to the deadline of 12 noon (GMT) on Friday 25 January 2019.

• Applications should demonstrate an interest in, and understanding of, the work of the R&A.

• Late or incomplete applications will not be considered under any circumstances.

• Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the first round of the selection process by the end of February 2019.

• If short-listed, applicants must be available to attend an interview in St Andrews on 15 March 2019, at which they will be expected to give a short presentation on their proposed use of the scholarship award.

• The award of the scholarship is subject to the successful applicant being granted a year’s leave of absence by the University. The successful applicant will be expected to have passed all module exams and not be carrying any deferred assessments prior to taking up the scholarship.

• The scholarship award will be taxable income. Once the successful applicants have been chosen the University can advise on the UK tax implications, but students domiciled outwith the UK should bear in mind that their home governments may impose other tax regulations. It is the responsibility of the successful applicant to consider the impact of the funding on their own tax and financial circumstances and to comply with all relevant tax regulations and reporting requirements.

• The successful applicant needs to be eligible to work in the UK as a student visa will not cover this employment period.

• The successful applicant will be expected to fulfil an ambassadorial role and present an account of their travel activities to the University and The R&A as well as to submit reports during the period of travel and at the completion of travel.

• Students may undertake travel at any point from June 2019 to September 2020.

• Joint applications are accepted – each applicant must upload the SAME project outline and then also upload their own personal statement to provide context for their individual application. Joint applicants, if selected for interview, will present their project to the panel together. The panel reserves the right to pro-rate the available funding in the case of successful joint applications.

English Language Requirements: All students entering the University must provide evidence that they can use English well enough to study effectively at St Andrews.

How to Apply: Applications must be made in the MySaint portal.There are separate arrangements for students of Medicine, who will need to make interim arrangements with their partner Medical School in order to take up the scholarship.
You should request TWO references (one must be an academic reference) from your intended referees early to allow them to submit in time to support your application. You are required to upload the references yourself to your application, but if your referee prefers to send them directly to stewardship-at-st-andrews.ac.uk, that will be acceptable. In this case, you must upload a document to your application that indicates who your referees are so we may match them to your application in time.
