1.    AEGD Program at the University of Connecticut

The University of Connecticut located in Storrs, Connecticut, and founded in the year 1881 is the first school that offers AEGD programs for international dentists.

The Advanced Education in General Dentistry program is a one-year (optional second-year) residency with a special emphasis on clinical general dentistry.

The program enrolls eighteen first-year residents who practice and learn in a setting that closely resembles a modern group practice.

The program is designed to enhance and improve the resident’s clinical skills as well as their scientific knowledge as regards dentistry.

During the program, fifteen percent of the resident’s time is devoted to a comprehensive didactic program, designed to build upon and enhance prior knowledge. 

The AEGD program provides a good and comprehensive clinical experience that is centered around the general dentistry clinic at UConn Health.

2.   AEGD Program at the University of Maryland school of dentistry

The University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) offers an Advanced Program for Internationally-Trained Dentists program in General Dentistry. It is the second school on our list that offers AEGD programs for international dentists.

This Advanced General Dentistry program is a continuing education program and offers a formalized, structured, and hands-on short-term educational experience for internationally-trained dentists. 

This program follows the schedule of the Advanced General Dentistry residency program, participants attend classes/seminars with the AEGD residents.

This program is a fixed program of a duration of 6 months.

Advanced Program for Internationally Trained Dentists in General Dentistry Program offers many benefits to internationally-trained dentists including:

  • Introduction to comprehensive care including analysis of clinical data to formulate sound diagnosis and treatment planning and formulation of differential and definitive diagnosis.
  • Introduction to updated dental materials
  • Exposure to implant workflow
  • Exposure to U.S. dental clinic practices
  • An opportunity to practice and perfect the English language, including technical language, skills
  • Help in deciding whether or not to pursue a formal residency in the U.S.

English Language Test Requirements:

  • TOEFL (minimum 80 internet-based tests, 550 paper-based)

3.    AEGD Program at Columbia college of dental medicine

The Advanced Education in General Dentistry program at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine provides a broad range of experiences through which residents apply evidence-based dentistry and the principles of professional ethics as they further advance their clinical skills. It is the third school on our list that offers AEGD programs for international dentists.

The Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) Postdoctoral Program is a 12-month certificate program with an optional second year. The AEGD program is open to US/Canadian and foreign-trained dentists.

The program offers a two-year-long position for postdoctoral students that are interested in an additional year of training.

This program helps them to enhance their clinical skills and manage more complex patients.

The Columbia University College of Dental Medicine Postdoctoral AEGD certificate program is fully compliant with the accreditation standards set forth by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).

The goal of this program is to prepare residents to independently deliver compassionate care to not only complex but special patients too.

4.     AEGD Program at Temple University, Kornberg School of Dentistry

The program is designed to accommodate six recent dental school graduates who function in the program as residents, as well as applicants who hold a DMD or DDS degree from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), accredited dental school. It is the fourth school on our list that offers AEGD programs for international dentists.

Dentists who hold a BDS, DMD, or DDS from an international dental school not accredited by CODA may apply to the AEGD program for international dentists.  

The AEGD program has a 15-chair clinical facility that includes 

a fully equipped dental laboratory, expanded dental operatories, instrument and materials storage, radiology capability, resident office space, sterilization area, waiting room, and front desk space.

This AEGD program begins in July and runs through the following June. The tuition cost for this program is a flat fee of $73,978 and an additional $4,500 instrument fee.

5.    AEGD program at NOVA Southeastern University

The Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program offered by NSU College of Dental Medicine is a one-year general dental program with an optional second year focused on more advanced general dentistry. 

The program is recognized by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association and culminates in a certificate from Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine. 

The residency is designed to refine and improve the resident’s clinical skills, techniques, and scientific knowledge base to improve the practice of general dentistry.

During this program, this course of study is designed to provide advanced training in clinical dentistry beyond the level of predoctoral education
