Uniarts Helsinki MA Scholarships in Choreography for International Students in Finland, 2019

The University of the Arts Helsinki is currently accepting applications for its two-year MA in Choreography programme starting fall 2019. The programme is open to international students and is tuition free for EU / EEA students.

The MA programme offers the student a multifaceted and collective learning environment, which supports her/his artistic development, critical awareness and understanding of the practices and strategies in contemporary choreography and of the interactional relationship between art and society.

The University of the Arts Helsinki (Uniarts Helsinki) fosters Finnish artistic heritage and renews art. The university was launched in 2013 upon the merging of the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, Sibelius Academy, and Theatre Academy Helsinki.

  • Course Level: Scholarships are available to study two-year MA programme.
  • Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded in the field in Choreography.
  • Scholarship Award: The University of the Arts Helsinki will introduce a scholarship programme in the form of tuition fee waivers, which aims to promote student recruitment and provide financial support for students who need it. Applicants should note that the University does not offer any scholarships for living expenses. Applicants who are liable for payment must also state on the application form if they want to apply for a scholarship from the University of the Arts Helsinki to cover the annual tuition fee if they get accepted. The scholarships are granted for one academic year at a time to some of the students based on their applications. The amount of the scholarship is 2,500 or 5,000 euros.
  • Nationality: The programme is open to international students and is tuition free for EU / EEA students.
  • Number of Scholarships: The intake is biennial and, in spring 2019, three to five new students will be accepted to the programme.

The Master’s Degree Programme in Choreography is a full-time, two-year study programme that emphasises a historically conscious, yet critical, open, and research-based approach to choreography. The programme is open to international students and is tuition free for EU / EEA students. Admissions to the programme are every other year and in spring 2019 three to five new students will be accepted.

English Language Requirements: The academies have different language requirements, which are presented in the guides for applicants. Short descriptions follow:

  • Academy of Fine Arts: The Academy of Fine Arts requires adequate skills in Finnish, Swedish, or English.  Maturity of the teaching is in Finnish or English, however, students can use Swedish orally and in written form during teaching and education assignments unless dictated otherwise in the curriculum or prohibited by the nature of the education. Applicants are to demonstrate their Finnish, Swedish or English language skills in the application phase.
  • Sibelius Academy: Music Education programme requires skills in Finnish or Swedish. Other programmes can be applied for also with skills in English. Applicants must have command of the language of instruction used in the programme. All applicants are to demonstrate their Finnish, Swedish, or English language skills in the application phase.
  • Theatre Academy: Degree studies at the Theatre Academy require sufficient command of Finnish, Swedish, or English. Applicants must have command of the language of instruction used in the programme. Applicants are to demonstrate their Finnish, Swedish or English language skills in the application phase.
    In programmes which have Finnish as teaching language students can use Swedish orally and in written form during teaching and education assignments unless dictated otherwise in the curriculum or prohibited by the nature of the education (the majority of group education is conducted in Finnish, making the language a necessity).

How to Apply: You apply to the Theatre Academy via the joint application system Studyinfo.fi (opintopolku.fi). Complete your application form between 9-23 January by 3 p.m. (Finnish time)

Applying to the Theatre Academy takes place electronically:

  • Fill in the application form and submit it via the Opintopolku (Studyinfo) service. Opintopolku/Studyinfo is the national Finnish application system.
  • Depending on the degree programme, advance assignments with attachments are to be submitted through Opintopolku or the Embark system.

We select new students once a year, in spring. The following application period, for studies beginning in autumn 2019, begins 9 January 2019 and ends 23 January 2019 at 3 p.m.
