Founded in 1994, the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) in Berlin is one of the more than 80 research institutes administered by the Max Planck Society. It is dedicated to the study of the history of science and aims to understand scientific thinking and practice as historical phenomena.
Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of proficiency in English at the higher level required by the University.

- Study Subject: Outstanding scholars beyond the postdoc phase of their careers are invited to apply for participation in the Art of Judgement research cluster. Particularly welcome are digital humanities approaches that make use of the material gathered as part of the Measuring the Earth: A Digital Repository for the History of Modern Geodesy project and research proposals that look at the materiality of measurement (e.g., practices, tools, and artifacts).

Applications from candidates in every field within the history of science, technology, and the environment are welcome, with some preference for projects looking outside or beyond traditional disciplinary, chronological, and geographical foci. The MPIWG hosts many academic activities: conferences, workshops, brown bag seminars, and colloquia. Visiting scholars are encouraged to combine their research stay with active participation in such events.
