Where,

M is the candidate’s grade point average (Single Session papers marks and Multi-Session papers normalised marks)

Mq is the qualifying mark for general category candidates in the paper

Mt the median of scores obtained by the top 10 or top 0.1 per cent of applicants who took the test (all sessions included in case of multi-session papers)

Sq is the score assigned to Mq, i.e 350

St is the score assigned to Mt, i.e 900

GATE 2022 Normalization Process

Certain GATE 2022 papers like Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering were conducted in multiple shifts. In these papers, the difficulty level of each of the shifts, topic-wise weightage etc differed. As a result, to conduct a fair test and assess a fair cutoff score, the officials employ the GATE normalization process. Once the officials calculate the normalized score for GATE 2022, they will use the same to prepare the final GATE scorecard.

The officials will use the following formula to calculate the GATE 2022 normalized score –

mij: the marks obtained by the candidate in the session

mgt: the average marks of candidates for all sessions

mgq: the sum of mean & Standard deviation for all sessions

mti: the average marks of candidates for one session

The candidates must remember that qualifying GATE does not guarantee a job in the PSUs. They might also have to pass the written test and personal interview round conducted by these PSUs as a part of their selection process.
