There are several exams for study abroad with scholarship like GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, SAT and others that maybe less popular but are yet fundamental requirements in some institutions abroad for internationals students.
Universities abroad demand that international students write at least one or two of these competitive study abroad exams and obtain a certain acceptable score to be considered for admission.
In countries like Nigeria, every student is expected to right the JAMB examination as a prerequisite to university admission. This exam is mandatory for both domestic and international students and can be written only once in in year. Over 1.5million people apply for the JAMB exam yearly and most times only about 500k people would end up passing the exam satisfactorily for their program of choice and being admitted too.
One of the most popular exams for study abroad with scholarship is TOEFL followed by IELTS. At least all best universities in the world accept TOEFL and most likely in some cases, IELTS.
These tests are put in place to examine the level of understanding especially in english language that an international student has before he or she is admitted to study in any English country. The exams turned to be competitive as there are now many international students applying for it and as it getting somehow tougher day by day.
Anyway, not everybody is expected to write these exams before being admitted to study abroad though some scholarship programs require that applicants provide their scores in any one or two of these exams for study abroad with scholarship yet there is still some exenptions.
If your country uses english as their primary method of instruction you can overide these exams with just a testimonial from your institution confirming that you are good enough with English.

SAT means Scholastic Aptitude Test. It is organized by the United States of America and is used as a criteria for admission except if an applicant has an equivalent to present.
SAT is usually offered about seven times in a year which normally falls on the first Saturdays of October, November, December, January, March, May and June. These same dates are also followed by most other countries that take SAT too.
MCAT and LSAT are mandatory for getting into medicine and law respectively in the USA and also Australia and Canada.
GRE stands for Graduate Record Examination and it is most popular among indians though taken in almost all countries of the world.
GMAT like GRE is also used to test majorly the verbal and mathematical abilities of an applicant as these are neccessary qualities to ensure that the stuidents has a hitch free study experience.
IELTS and TOEFL like I said earlier are the most widely known exams for study abroad with scholarship and even self sponsorship. They are a mandatory test for Indians and other non-native English speaking countries.
TOEFL has several centers in west Africa and these centers are normally the approved places to take the exam.
